Nombre y rango: capitán Clifton Emmet Cushman, alias "Cliff". Nacido un 2 de junio de 1938, en Grandforks, Dakota del Norte (Estados Unidos). Méritos: campeón universitario y nacional de los 400 metros vallas; medalla de plata en los Juegos Olímpicos de Roma, sólo por detrás del gran Glenn Davis; un tropezón en los "trials" le dejó fuera de Tokio 64. Militar de carrera, pronto fue enviado a la Guerra de Vietnam, en el Escuadrón táctico 469. Misión de Alto Secreto: el 25 de septiembre de 1966 el capitán Emmet pilotaba un bombardero supersónico F-105 "Thunderchief", a 29 millas de Bac Ciang, al norte del país. Sus compañeros vieron como una batería enemiga alcanzó su aparato, el cual se estrelló en la selva. No se pudo certificar su muerte o no en el momento. Tras muchas dudas, en 1992 un informe concluyó que Cushman logró salir del avión y cayó en paracaidas, pero fue acribillado en tierra por los norvietnamitas. Caso cerrado. El Viet Cong bien sabía que no podía dejar en tierra a Cushman ni 400 metros de ventaja.
